Spotlight: Dominican Republic brothers helped by ICHF

Maximo_&_FatherSandy McMahan, ICHF Administrative Director, interviewed the father of Maximo and Elmo on her recent trip with the medical team to Santiago, Domnican Republic. About a dozen children, after surgery, are in a ward with their parents.

Maximo, just three years old, was operated on for tetralogy of Fallot. His father, Emilo, sat at his young son’s side, grateful that his youngest son is doing so well, but he could not celebrate because Junior, his 15 year old son, was scheduled for a high risk surgery the next day. Marguerita, his wife, was not at the hospital because she had to care for their two daughters at home in Gurabo, just outside Santiago.

It’s good news for Junior. Like his brother, Junior came through the surgery just fine and now the whole family celebrates as the ICHF team leaves Santiago. Emilo graciously thanked ICHF saying, “God bless the ICHF medical team for what they are doing. The Lord is going to pay them because I can’t.”

Mission Statement

The mission of the International Children’s Heart Foundation (ICHF) is to bring the skills, technology and knowledge to cure and care for children with congenital heart disease in developing nations.  ICHF does this regardless of country of origin, race, religion or gender. Our goal is to make the need for ICHF obsolete. We work toward this goal through our medical mission trips, where we operate on children and educate local healthcare professionals.
